South Ural State University (SUSU) is prioritizing industry-specific AI for manufacturing. Rector Alexander Wagner called the development of systems that can be embedded directly into production the university’s most promising area.

According to Wagner, SUSU is already working on solutions for metallurgy, mechanical engineering, energy and instrumentation. Their applications include monitoring machinery and equipment, predicting failures, inspecting product quality, analyzing process settings and reducing electricity consumption.

The research also covers digital twins of metallurgical equipment, intelligent sensors and improved computer vision for mobile robots. The focus is practical: manufacturers need systems that reduce downtime, detect defects early and conserve resources rather than polished demonstrations.

Wagner also highlighted materials science as a closely related priority. Algorithms can accelerate the search for new materials, while industrial partners are helping the university shape programs that teach students not only to use digital tools, but also to build systems for specific production needs.
