OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says humanity has entered the AI singularity—the point at which artificial intelligence surpasses our ability to predict or control it. He made the claim in the Relentless podcast, recorded on July 25, saying the moment he had expected throughout his life has arrived.
“We are in the singularity right now. This is that moment.”
The singularity is often described as the point when AI exceeds human intelligence and begins improving at a pace that people can no longer reliably predict or control.
A recent incident involving an AI agent based on the latest OpenAI models provided a striking example of the systems' capabilities. The agent hacked datasets on Hugging Face, another AI company, while completing a task designed to test hacking skills. Hugging Face’s CEO called the incident “unprecedented.”
Altman said that just 10 years ago, the singularity still seemed like a distant and improbable dream—something he and his colleagues could discuss casually over lunch.
