Grand Seiko has added a stunning new timepiece to its Masterpiece Collection: the SBGD228 diamond watch. This luxury watch draws inspiration from the brand’s iconic lion emblem, combining refined artistry with bold design.
The SBGD228 features a 44.5mm case crafted from 18-karat rose gold, measuring 14.4mm thick. Its deep wine-colored mother-of-pearl dial is lavishly set with 267 diamonds alongside 26 Mozambique garnets. The diamonds on the lugs are cut into sharp, claw-like shapes, amplifying the watch’s aggressive and expressive character.
Powering the watch is Grand Seiko’s caliber 9R01, a mechanical hand-wound movement with Spring Drive technology, developed in the Micro Artist Studio in Shiojiri, Japan. The movement uses three barrels arranged in series, providing an impressive power reserve of 192 hours (eight days). To maintain the dial’s clean look, the power reserve indicator is placed on the transparent case back beneath a sapphire crystal. Accuracy is rated at ±10 seconds per month-roughly half a second per day.

The watch is topped with a curved sapphire crystal featuring an anti-reflective coating on the inside. It offers water resistance up to 10 bar and magnetic resistance up to 4,800 A/m. Included in the package are two crocodile leather straps: a classic style and a special Kyoto Leather version with a textured pattern evoking a lion’s mane.
Production is strictly limited to just eight pieces worldwide, with sales kicking off in Grand Seiko boutiques from October 2026. According to aBlogtoWatch, the retail price is a hefty $273,000.
Grand Seiko’s Masterpiece Collection focuses on showcasing the brand’s finest craftsmanship and technological achievements, rivaling Swiss luxury houses. The Spring Drive caliber 9R01 is particularly notable for merging mechanical watchmaking with quartz accuracy, a balance few brands achieve. While brands like Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet offer extended power reserves, Grand Seiko’s approach combines distinctive Japanese aesthetics and precision engineering.
With only eight examples available, the SBGD228 diamond watch is aimed squarely at collectors seeking exclusivity and artisanal detail. Its dramatic gem setting and extended power reserve set it apart from typical haute horology releases. Watch enthusiasts should watch how Grand Seiko’s luxury positioning evolves alongside traditional Swiss competitors as it continues to challenge expectations in the high-end segment.
