Pixel 6 support is ending, but the phone can live on

The Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are approaching the end of their software-support lifespans. Launched in October 2021, the phones are due to receive five years of updates, but Google has confirmed they will not get access to the latest Android QPR2 Beta 1.

“Pixel 6 and 6 Pro users will not be getting this OTA since the device will reach End of Life and Android 17 QPR1 beta series will be the last for these devices.”

The final stable release will officially be Android 17 QPR1, expected as part of the September Pixel Drop. That should arrive shortly before the phones' five-year anniversary in October 2026.

The devices will continue to work after reaching end of life, but they will no longer receive new features or security updates. Over time, unsupported software can become more exposed to bugs and malware, while apps may slow down or behave unpredictably. Google is also set to unveil the Pixel 11 series on Wednesday, August 12, offering Pixel 6 owners a potential upgrade path.

Six ways to reuse a Pixel 6

Owners who are not ready to upgrade can recycle the phone through their network operator, which may offer cash back, or use a third-party recycling service. The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro can also be repurposed without regular Android updates:

• Dedicated e-reader: Install the Kindle app or another ebook reader.
• Car dashcam: Mount the phone on the dashboard, connect it to power, and use an app such as Droid Dashcam.
• Alternative webcam: The phone may offer higher resolution and more flexible angles than a current webcam.
• Portable power bank: USB-C charging lets either Pixel charge another phone, while wireless charging can handle smaller devices.
• Wi-Fi extender: Use the hotspot option under Network and internet in Settings to improve coverage in part of a home.
• PC console: Apps such as Touch Portal can turn the phone into a Stream Deck-like controller for gaming and streaming.

That gives Pixel 6 owners several months to choose between an upgrade, recycling, or keeping the phone useful instead of leaving it in a drawer or adding to the growing e-waste problem.
