AI recording tools capture conversations without warning

AI transcription tools can record conversations without visible bots or alerts, raising privacy, legal and workplace risks.

AI-powered transcription tools are making it easy to record conversations without the other participants realizing their speech is being saved. According to The Wall Street Journal, background recording has become simple enough that people are using these services not only for work meetings, but also during personal conversations.

One example is Granola, which received $125 million in investment this year at a $1.5 billion valuation. The service captures audio directly through the user’s device microphone instead of joining a call as a separate participant. That means no visible recording bot appears in the conversation, and no automatic recording notification is sent.

This differs from conventional video-conferencing tools, where participants can usually see that a recording service is present.

Recording dates, therapy and medical visits

Use of these systems has already moved beyond the workplace. Emmy Chang, founder of startup Yuzu Labs, told the newspaper that she records first dates and then sends the transcripts to Claude for conversation analysis. Other users have reported recording therapy sessions, doctor visits and meetings with friends without telling the people involved.

The legal exposure varies by location. In 11 US states, including California, Florida, Illinois and Pennsylvania, recording a conversation without the consent of all participants may violate wiretapping laws and, in some cases, constitute a criminal offense.

The issue is also emerging in corporate settings. Company leaders and data-protection professionals warn that unobtrusive “AI stenographers” can create legal and privacy risks. There have been cases in which recording tools remained active after formal video meetings ended, capturing employees' informal conversations.

Researchers are also examining the cognitive consequences of relying heavily on systems that capture and process information. Studies of cognitive offloading link excessive dependence on such technologies with reduced independent information processing and critical thinking.
