Nigeria launches AI satellite crop-monitoring system

Nigeria is rolling out NAPS, an AI and satellite platform tracking crops, yields and food-security risks across the country.

Nigeria is deploying an AI- and satellite-based agricultural monitoring system designed to provide up-to-date information on crop conditions nationwide.

The National Agro-Productivity System (NAPS) will track:

  • Crop yields and land use
  • Planting patterns and available farmland
  • Potential risks to food security

The platform is intended to address a basic data gap: the lack of accurate, current information about which crops farmers are growing during each season. Its forecasts will support decisions on food reserves, imports, exports, and investment in agriculture.

NAPS rollout and pilot results

The rollout will take place in three stages. NAPS will first be tested in one state, then expanded to three states, and finally deployed across 15 priority regions. All platform data will be stored on servers in Nigeria, keeping sensitive information under the country’s control.

Before the national launch, NAPS completed pilot testing over three planting seasons in 13 states. The trials analyzed data from more than 250,000 farmers, surveyed over 50,000 farms across more than 2,000 communities, tracked five priority crops, and produced more than 1 million agricultural datasets.
