Samsung launches a lower-power 990 SSD

Samsung has officially launched the Samsung 990 SSD, a PCIe Gen 4 NVMe drive aimed at everyday users who want faster storage for gaming, creative work, and daily computing.

The drive is available now in two capacities:

  • 1TB — $269.99
  • 2TB — $529.99

According to Mashable, the new model is positioned as a faster, more efficient option for people upgrading an existing PC or building a new desktop.

Speed targets everyday workloads

Samsung says the 990 SSD delivers sequential read speeds of up to 7,250 MB/s and write speeds of up to 6,450 MB/s. The company says those specs should help with shorter game load times, faster installs, and quicker transfers for large photo and video files.

On random performance, Samsung lists speeds of up to 850K IOPS for reads and 1,200K IOPS for writes. The company says that should help keep everyday workloads responsive.

Efficiency is a key selling point

Samsung is also emphasizing power efficiency rather than just peak speed. The company says the 990 SSD offers up to 38% better performance per watt than the 990 Pro, which Samsung describes as its flagship SSD.

That could matter for laptops and other systems where lower power draw is useful, while still keeping the performance profile of a high-end Gen 4 NVMe drive.

Software support included

Samsung bundles the drive with its Magician software, which includes tools to:

  • monitor drive health
  • install firmware updates
  • manage security features

Those controls are available from a single dashboard, according to the report.

Pricing note

While Mashable’s article lists the launch prices as $269.99 for 1TB and $529.99 for 2TB, it also says shoppers can “Grab the Samsung 990 SSD starting at $279.” The article does not explain that discrepancy.

The sharper takeaway is clear enough: Samsung’s new 990 SSD is now on sale, and the company is pitching it on speed and power efficiency rather than flagship pricing.
