Qualcomm robot collapses during demo after connection loss

A 4NE-1 humanoid robot collapsed onto its back during a public demonstration at Computex 2026, prompting Qualcomm to explain that the dramatic failure was the result of an intended safety response rather than a mechanical malfunction.

The robot, developed by NEURA Robotics, is built on Qualcomm’s Dragonwing IQ10 Robotics Reference Design. During the presentation, 4NE-1 approached a Qualcomm representative and handed over a Dragonwing IQ10 demonstration board. Several seconds later, it suddenly fell backward. Organizers first covered the robot with a cloth and then carried it off the stage.

Why the 4NE-1 robot fell

Qualcomm told Tom’s Hardware that the incident began with a brief loss of connection. Once the interruption was detected, the robot’s built-in safety system automatically switched it into a controlled shutdown mode.

According to Qualcomm, 4NE-1 then performed its programmed “safe fall” procedure. The goal is to reduce the risk to people standing near the robot if communication or control is interrupted. The company said the safety system operated as designed, even though the result looked unusual during a live demonstration.

Qualcomm also said incidents like this provide developers with real-world data that can be used to improve algorithms and increase the reliability of robotic platforms. The company did not provide further details about the connection failure or how long it lasted.

Dragonwing IQ10 specifications

The 4NE-1 is powered by Qualcomm’s Dragonwing IQ10 platform, which delivers approximately 700 TOPS of computing performance. Qualcomm designed the platform for humanoid robots and other complex autonomous systems that need to process large volumes of data in real time.

In this case, the platform’s most visible behavior was not the handoff demonstration but the programmed decision to let the robot fall when connectivity was lost.
