Nvidia is negotiating with OpenAI to provide roughly $250 billion in financial guarantees for a giant data center in Ohio, according to The Wall Street Journal. The proposed facility would have 10 gigawatts of capacity, while total investment could exceed $500 billion.
The project is being developed by SoftBank’s energy division. Nvidia’s guarantees would help OpenAI lease the site and secure debt financing, potentially giving the model company its own computing infrastructure rather than relying on capacity rented from Microsoft, Amazon, and Oracle.
Nvidia, meanwhile, would gain a long-term customer for its AI accelerators. Sources say the company is also discussing financing up to $350 billion in chip purchases for OpenAI, though those potential deliveries would be separate from the financial-guarantee package.

Ohio data center timeline and competition
The first phase, with capacity of about 800 megawatts, is scheduled to enter service in 2028. The project is supported by a U.S.-Japan agreement that includes Japanese investment in a gas-fired power plant.
Anthropic, Microsoft, and Google are also reportedly interested in the site, adding competition for what could become one of the largest data centers ever proposed.
