Apple is reportedly gearing up to release a new iPad Air featuring an OLED display in 2027, marking a major shift from the current LCD models. This move aligns with earlier rumors from late 2023 that predicted the Air lineup would transition to OLED screens within the next few years.
Samsung Display is set to be the supplier for these OLED panels, with industry insiders suggesting that mass production could begin by late 2026 or early 2027. This timing would position Apple to unveil the updated iPad Air around March 2027, mirroring the launch schedule of the current model powered by the M4 chip.

The upcoming iPad Air is expected to sport an LTPS OLED panel, a technology also used in high-end devices for its efficiency and image quality. Currently, only the iPad Pro models have OLED displays, while the regular iPad Air continues to rely on LCD screens-as seen in the latest M4-equipped Air released in March 2024.
Adding to the OLED wave, the iPad mini is rumored to adopt OLED screens as early as 2024. Apple is also exploring OLED integration for MacBook Air models, potentially by 2028. These moves reflect a broader shift in Apple’s display strategy, as it phases out LCDs in favor of OLED for better contrast, color accuracy, and power efficiency.
Compared to rivals like Samsung and Google, who have embraced OLED for years across tablets and laptops, Apple has been gradually expanding OLED adoption. The 2027 launch of an OLED iPad Air will bring the midrange tablet line closer to the visual standards set by premium devices, narrowing the gap within the iPad family.
What remains to be seen is how Apple balances cost and performance with this transition, especially since OLED manufacturing can be pricier. Watch for whether the OLED iPad Air will introduce other upgrades alongside the display, such as improved battery life or new design elements.
