Three AI models pick the best smartphone

ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini pick different phones, but the Google Pixel 10 emerges as the most practical choice for most buyers.

ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini were asked to choose the best smartphone for most people. Their answers varied, but the experiment produced one clear winner for the reviewer: ChatGPT, whose recommendation most closely matched practical buying advice.

The test used the same prompt for each model. It asked them to ignore the reviewer’s personal views and articles while weighing price, software support, performance, typical usage, consumer reviews, and sentiment. Each model also had to provide a top-three ranking with explanations.

ChatGPT picks the Google Pixel 10

ChatGPT-5.5 quickly chose the Google Pixel 10 as the best option for most consumers. Its reasoning focused on the phone’s camera, software speed and support, and battery life. The model credited the Pixel 10 with flagship-level camera performance that does not require photography expertise, while also noting that buyers can save hundreds of dollars compared with a similarly capable flagship.

ChatGPT named the Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max and the base Galaxy S26 as honorable mentions. It acknowledged that the iPhone remained the best choice for the average mainstream buyer, but preferred the Pixel 10 for its overall balance and more reasonable price in 2026.

The recommendation also avoided enthusiast priorities. ChatGPT argued that most users do not need extreme zoom cameras or oversized displays—an approach the reviewer found refreshing amid the constant focus on premium specifications.

Claude favors the standard iPhone 17

Claude Sonnet 4.6 selected the standard iPhone 17, citing many of the same fundamentals as ChatGPT: lower pricing, strong software support, and solid performance. The reviewer observed that Claude relied heavily on reviews and echoed points from the articles it referenced, but the model maintained its original choice when challenged.

Claude’s honorable mentions included the Pixel 10 and, uniquely among the three models, the OnePlus 15. The reviewer found that choice notable given OnePlus’s retreat from US markets, but said Claude’s value-focused reasoning made sense. The OnePlus 15 was described as an excellent lower-priced flagship compared with the Pixel 10 Pro XL and Galaxy S26 Ultra.

Gemini changes its recommendation

Gemini 3.5 Flash initially recommended the Pixel 9 Pro XL, with the Galaxy S25 as an honorable mention. After being reminded that it was 2026, Gemini updated its information and first chose the iPhone 17.

The reviewer found Gemini’s initial reasoning less substantial and challenged it to remove any iPhone hype. Gemini wavered, then changed its final recommendation to the Pixel 10, pointing to the long-term cost benefits of extended software support.

Gemini was also the only model to mention the Pixel 10a as a sensible alternative. It argued that 90% of smartphone activity consists of web browsing, social media, and communication, leaving most users little reason to spend more than the $500 price of the 10a.

AI needs a skeptical buyer

The experiment convinced the reviewer that large language models are useful as sounding boards, but are not ready to handle buying advice without supervision. Users should question recommendations and push back when the reasoning feels thin.

ChatGPT ultimately won because its priorities most closely matched the reviewer’s own advice. The Pixel 10 may not be flashy or specification-focused, but the experiment’s conclusion was that it remains an excellent phone for most users.
