Fake Vodafone sites target tourists' data

Kaspersky found fake Vodafone, Ooredoo, and Singtel sites targeting tourists' logins, phone numbers, and payment-card details.

Kaspersky Lab has identified a new wave of phishing websites impersonating overseas mobile operators and targeting tourists. The fake pages include Vodafone, Ooredoo, and The Singtel Group.

Visitors are typically asked for a phone number, login credentials, or payment details. A fake Vodafone site examined by researchers was reportedly almost indistinguishable from the operator’s genuine account-login page. Any credentials entered are sent to attackers; attempts to top up an account or pay for mobile data can also expose bank-card details.

Tatyana Kulikova of Kaspersky Lab attributed the increase in these attacks to criminals using AI more often to build counterfeit pages and promote them through advertising. Similar schemes have previously targeted airline tickets, sales, and major sporting events. Overseas travel is now part of the same fraud cycle.

The recommended precautions are straightforward:

  • Check the website address character by character.
  • Avoid opening attachments from suspicious emails.
  • Set up an eSIM through the operator’s official app before departure.

Major operators already offer official apps and digital eSIM profiles, reducing the need to enter payment information on random browser pages.
