Star Wars: The Ninth Jedi is getting its big stage moment at Anime Expo, where Lucasfilm and Production I.G. plan a special screening, new footage, and likely the first real update fans have been waiting for: the release date. The anime spin-off from Star Wars: Visions is slated to land on Disney+ this summer, and the Expo panel on 2 July is the obvious place to lock in the missing details.
The setup is familiar, and that is partly the point. Streamers and anime studios love turning convention panels into launch pads because it gives them a built-in audience of diehards, cosplay cameras, and instant social clips. If the panel delivers a trailer and a date, The Ninth Jedi will arrive with more momentum than a quiet platform drop ever could manage.
What Lucasfilm and Production I.G. will show
Anime Expo says the first episode will be screened as part of a dedicated panel for the project. The event will also be attended by supervising director and writer Kenji Kamiyama, director Shunsuke Tada, producer Hitoshi Ito, and Lucasfilm executive producers Jacqueline Lopez and Josh Rimes, which is a strong signal that this is not a filler appearance. Studios do not usually roll out that many decision-makers just to say ”coming soon.”
The safest bet is that the panel reveals the exact Disney+ premiere date and a fresh trailer. That would fit the usual convention playbook, but it also makes sense for a title with built-in goodwill: The Ninth Jedi started as one of the standout shorts in the first volume of Visions, and the new series has the luxury of being able to piggyback on that reputation instead of explaining itself from scratch.
How The Ninth Jedi connects to Visions
The series expands the world first introduced in the short film The Ninth Jedi, which arrived in the first volume of Visions in 2021. Its sequel, The Ninth Jedi: Child of Hope, surfaced in the third volume of the anthology and bridged the gap into the upcoming show, so the timeline has been kept unusually tidy for a franchise known for detours.
- Platform: Disney+
- Reveal date: 2 July at Anime Expo
- Setting: an era when the Jedi are nearly gone
- Lead character: Kara, daughter of master weaponsmith Lah Zhima
That premise still does the job: a vanished Jedi order, forged lightsabers, Sith captivity, and a young lead forced into the fight. It is classic Star Wars mythmaking, but the anime treatment gives it a cleaner, sharper silhouette than most live-action sprawl tends to manage.
The summer release window is the real clue
Lucasfilm has already said the full series will arrive this summer, so the Anime Expo panel is less a teaser than a timing announcement waiting to happen. If the trailer lands, expect the internet to do what it always does with Star Wars: overanalyze every frame, argue about continuity, and pretend it was never invested in the first place.
The only open question now is how much of the season Lucasfilm is willing to show on stage. A clean date drop would be the safe play; a longer preview would suggest the studio thinks The Ninth Jedi can carry more than nostalgia and name recognition alone.
