Jensen Huang urges Washington to protect open AI
Jensen Huang’s first X post shared a letter from 25 companies urging Washington not to overregulate open AI models. Elon Musk endorsed it.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang used his first post on X, formerly Twitter, to share an open letter signed by 25 companies warning Washington against repeating the mistake of excessively restricting technology. The letter argues that AI models with open weights should remain a foundation of US leadership.
“Open models strengthen security and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation and the spread of knowledge, and provide sovereignty. The world needs both advanced closed models and advanced open models.”
Elon Musk backed Huang’s position in a reply:
“I fully support this. Jensen is right.”
The case for open AI models
Huang drew a direct parallel between today’s debate over open AI and the open-source software movement of the 1980s. Open source eventually became a foundation of the modern internet despite early skepticism, he argued, and open AI models should be allowed to develop rather than face “premature restrictions.”
The letter, signed by approximately 25 organizations, including Microsoft, Meta, Hugging Face, Andreessen Horowitz, Perplexity, and IBM, makes three central claims:

- Open models expand economic access for startups and universities.
- They strengthen competition by preventing a small number of firms from controlling the technology.
- They can improve security by allowing more researchers to inspect code and fix vulnerabilities, rather than relying on a small number of closed “single points of failure.”
The document also defends distillation—training one model using the outputs of another—as a legitimate, long-established research method that should not be confused with theft, although the issue remains actively contested.
It further argues that open source did more than reduce software costs: it created “a shared foundation of knowledge on which generations of American engineers and entrepreneurs built their institutional sovereignty.”
The source notes that Meta, the organization behind Instagram and Facebook, is designated an extremist organization and banned in Russia.
