Only 2,000 elite FDEs may serve U.S. AI demand
Christian & Timbers says only 2,000 elite U.S. engineers can reliably deliver enterprise AI ROI as FDE demand could rise 2,100% in 2026.

Only about 2,000 engineers in the U.S. have the combination of industry expertise, credibility, and hands-on applied AI experience needed to reliably deliver returns on enterprise AI spending, according to executive search firm Christian & Timbers (C&T).
That figure represents the total talent pool—not the number currently available for hire. C&T’s study, shared exclusively with TechCrunch, says demand for these specialists could surge 2,100% by the end of 2026.
Why forward-deployed engineers are in demand
Forward-deployed engineers, or FDEs, work inside client organizations to build, implement, and deploy software or AI models. Their role has become more valuable as companies move past selecting powerful models and focus on integrating them into workflows that improve revenue, reduce costs, or replace manual labor.
C&T based its research on interviews with more than 250 C-suite hiring executives across 180 companies, a survey of 80 Fortune 500 executives, and interviews with more than 300 FDEs and applied AI engineers conducted between January and June 2026.

At the beginning of the year, just 5% to 10% of companies planned to hire FDEs, generally for small pilot programs. By the end of the second quarter, that figure had risen to 70%. The largest consulting and services firms said they needed to increase their FDE headcount by 10 times, creating teams of 20 to 100 employees.
“This is all happening at a speed I’ve never seen. Enterprises are hiring in the middle of summer.”
The gap between available and elite talent
C&T estimates that roughly 17,000 FDEs are currently on the U.S. market. A significant number already work for Palantir, which pioneered the FDE model years ago. Christian said some clients are buying Palantir’s technology partly to gain access to its engineers.
Only a fraction of those 17,000 specialists are considered capable of producing substantial business results. Christian said the relevant benchmark is now “multiple tens of millions of dollars of ROI impact.” That could come from accelerating revenue through lead generation, replacing FP&A functions, or replacing 2,300 document processors in India.
The distinction is not simply between engineers who can deploy a model and those who cannot. Chris Taylor, CEO of Ode with Anthropic, a new FDE-focused services firm, said many engineers can help a company roll out Claude Code, while far fewer can build a core AI product feature.
“Many FDEs are well equipped to help you roll Claude Code out to your workforce. Very few are capable of building your flagship AI product feature.”
OpenAI and Anthropic build FDE teams
The pressure to prove value is rising as enterprises scrutinize their AI budgets. Christian said Wall Street could begin penalizing companies that have spent hundreds of millions or billions of dollars on AI without producing measurable returns, while rewarding companies that have.
AI developers face a similar challenge. Frontier AI companies have already spent tens of billions of dollars training and deploying models, and their path to profitability depends partly on embedding those systems in as many enterprises as possible. That effort is being challenged by cheaper, increasingly capable open-weight models from China.
OpenAI and Anthropic have responded by creating dedicated ventures staffed with FDEs: OpenAI’s Deployment Company and Anthropic’s Ode with Anthropic. Their stated purpose is to bring each company’s technology into enterprise workflows.
Enterprises want internal FDE teams
The hiring push extends beyond frontier AI companies and major consultancies. Businesses in insurance, fintech, healthcare, and gaming are also seeking FDEs. Some are building teams internally rather than relying on providers such as Ode or OpenAI’s Deployment Company.
The reason is control over proprietary processes. Christian said companies worry that sharing how their businesses operate with AI vendors could allow those vendors to compete with them. Taylor said he is hearing the phrase “internal forward-deployed engineers” more often, although his clients are not yet asking Ode to build internal teams for them.
The role’s future remains uncertain. Christian said automation could eventually reduce the need for human FDEs, with agents building and managing other agents. In the medium term, he expects demand to shift from enterprise AI toward physical AI, including the use of humanoid robots in company workflows.
Within five or 10 years, he said, the FDE role could disappear altogether. C&T has not yet seen a slowdown in its fast-growing-industry recruiting business, though Christian said more general search firms have already received fewer recruitment requests. “Everything to do with AI is growing and in demand,” he said—“for now.”
