Apple has reportedly sent legal preservation letters to around 40 former employees who now work at OpenAI, according to the Financial Times. The notices follow Apple’s lawsuit last week alleging that former employees stole trade secrets “for the benefit of OpenAI.”

A legal preservation letter formally instructs an individual or organization to retain documents, records, and other evidence that could be relevant to a dispute. The letters typically specify which materials must be preserved.

Apple suspects the alleged trade-secret theft may involve more former employees than those identified in its initial complaint. That filing names OpenAI and io Products as defendants, along with former Apple employees Chang Liu and Tang Tan.

OpenAI has said it has seen no evidence supporting Apple’s trade-secret allegations. The lawsuit has also prompted questions about how many former Apple employees now work at OpenAI, although OpenAI’s hardware timeline remains unchanged, according to related reporting.
