AMD and Anthropic target 2 GW AI buildout
AMD and Anthropic plan up to 2 GW of AI capacity using Instinct accelerators, with the first 1 GW targeted for 2027 and up to $5 billion in investment.

AMD and Anthropic announced a strategic agreement on July 22, 2026, to build up to 2 GW of AI computing capacity using AMD Instinct accelerators. Anthropic will deploy the hardware in AMD’s Helios rack systems, with the first 1 GW scheduled for the first half of 2027. AMD plans to invest up to $5 billion in the developer of the Claude model.
Hardware and software partnership
The deployment will use AMD Instinct MI455X accelerators from the MI450 family, alongside EPYC Venice processors, Pensando networking, and the ROCm software platform. Anthropic already uses MI355X accelerators; the new agreement expands that relationship into a larger-scale deployment.
The partnership also covers multi-year software engineering. Anthropic will help optimize Claude for AMD Instinct accelerators and contribute to ROCm, which supports efficient use of computing resources for training and running AI models. AMD plans to use Claude across its own engineering and product teams.

The announced 2 GW is a target capacity, not an installed amount of computing power. The companies have not disclosed the number of GPUs, data-center locations, infrastructure costs, or the complete schedule for the second phase.
Actual performance will depend on data-center readiness, cooling, networking, software, and cluster utilization. AMD’s investment of up to $5 billion is tied to deployment milestones, with the first key target being the launch of 1 GW in 2027.
