Vaio has unveiled the refreshed SX14-R, a 14-inch ultralight laptop designed for durability and power. Built with a carbon fiber chassis and weighing under 1.3 kilograms, the new model blends portability with strength. It’s available in five colors, open for pre-order now on Vaio’s official website, with shipments expected to start on May 22, 2026. Prices begin at 327,800 yen (about $2,050).
The second-generation SX14-R packs Intel’s latest Core Ultra processors: the Core Ultra 7 356H and Core Ultra 5 325. Thanks to integrated neural processing units (NPUs) delivering between 47 and 50 TOPS (trillions of operations per second), AI-related tasks see a significant boost. Vaio claims the CPU performance is up 23% compared to the previous SX14-R model (VJS4R1). The laptop complies with the Copilot+ PC standard, unlocking advanced AI features in Windows 11.
Memory options include 16, 32, or a hefty 64GB of LPDDR5X RAM, paired with PCIe 4.0 SSDs ranging from 256GB to 2TB for storage.
The display offers a 16:10 aspect ratio with two panel choices: a matte screen at 1920×1200 resolution or a glossy 2560×1600 touchscreen that supports stylus input. Vaio also revamped the keyboard and touchpad for quieter, more refined typing and navigation.

Connectivity is comprehensive, including:
- One HDMI port
- Two USB 3.0 ports
- Two USB 3.2 ports featuring Thunderbolt 4 with Power Delivery and DisplayPort 2.1 support
- Wired Ethernet
- Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4
- Optional 5G connectivity via nanoSIM or eSIM
This wide range of options supports mobile computing and remote work scenarios.
Security features include face login through a 9.2MP webcam supporting Windows Hello and a fingerprint sensor embedded in the power button. For video calls, the SX14-R includes stereo speakers tuned with Dolby Atmos and a triple-mic setup featuring AI-driven noise suppression.
Battery life depends on configuration, ranging from 11 to 20.5 hours of video playback under the JEITA 3.0 standard. Weight varies slightly from 985 grams up to 1.257 kilograms, keeping it firmly in the ultraportable category.
Vaio’s new SX14-R competes in the ultralight laptop segment against models like the Dell XPS and Apple MacBook Air. Its key differentiator is the inclusion of Intel Core Ultra chips with dedicated NPUs, which enhance AI acceleration – a growing priority in premium laptops running Windows 11.
Looking ahead, it will be interesting to see how Vaio leverages AI capabilities in its software ecosystem to further distinguish the SX14-R. The balance of battery life, lightweight design, and AI performance will ultimately determine its appeal versus competitors from Apple, Microsoft, and others integrating advanced AI features in this evolving space.
