Samsung has unveiled UFS 5.0, a new storage standard built for on-device AI, with faster response times for large language models and better power efficiency for future phones and other compact gadgets. The headline is simple enough: storage is no longer just storage; it is now part of the AI stack, and Samsung clearly wants to own that conversation before rivals make a louder noise about it.
The company says UFS 5.0 reaches bandwidth speeds of up to 10.8 gigabytes per second, with sequential read speed of up to 10.8 gigabits per second and sequential write speed of up to 9.5 gigabits per second. Samsung also says that is essentially twice as fast as UFS 4.1, which should matter if more AI features are going to run locally instead of bouncing through the cloud.
UFS 5.0 speed and power gains
Samsung says the new solution improves power efficiency by more than 40% compared with UFS 4.1, thanks to techniques such as clock gating and multi-voltage designs. That is the sort of improvement phone makers love because it helps them sell both performance and battery life without pretending those two things are always friends.

Samsung plans to start mass production in the fourth quarter of this year, with capacities up to one terabyte. The timing suggests the company wants to be ready for the next wave of AI-focused devices, while competitors will have to decide whether to match the spec sheet or try to argue that software matters more than raw storage speed.
