Microsoft will end OneDrive synchronisation support for Windows 10 versions released before 22H2 on August 15. After that date, users on older builds will no longer receive OneDrive sync app updates, bug fixes, or security patches.
The service will not stop working immediately, but Microsoft warns that “future functionality is not guaranteed.” The change will also affect Microsoft 365 file synchronisation services running on unsupported Windows 10 versions.
Microsoft said the policy change “aligns OneDrive support with the Windows lifecycle policy and helps Microsoft focus ongoing investments on supported operating systems.”
Users on pre-22H2 releases have three main options:

- Use OneDrive through its web interface instead of desktop synchronisation
Windows 10 22H2, the operating system’s final version, will continue receiving OneDrive sync updates until October 10, 2028.
The move is part of Microsoft’s broader tightening of its Windows ecosystem in 2026, as the company makes some AI features optional while ending support for other configurations. The source describes CEO Satya Nadella’s restructuring as focused on AI-first products, with legacy support reductions helping consolidate resources around that strategy.
Users seeking alternatives could consider Nextcloud, which supports Windows 10 back to version 1809 and also runs on Linux. For people dependent on automatic desktop synchronisation, however, upgrading Windows may be the least disruptive option before August 15.
