Musk’s AI abundance promise faces a reality check

AI is a disruptor, not a savior, argues TechRadar columnist Lance Ulanoff. It is reshaping work, industry, business, and daily life, he writes, but that does not mean it can eliminate poverty or change the basic economics of goods, services, energy, and resources.

Ulanoff points to the roughly 1/7 of the world’s population living in poverty and to the visible homelessness he encounters in New York. There is no simple technological solution to those problems, he argues—especially when AI itself consumes large quantities of electricity and water.

Musk’s prediction of an AI-powered abundance

The column responds to Elon Musk’s prediction that the world could reach an age of abundance within 10 years. Under that vision, money would no longer be needed by 2036, AI would become smarter than humans, and robotic automation would help produce or protect resources such as water, energy, and precious metals.

Ulanoff challenges the premise that robots can make those resources effectively unlimited. Mining precious metals requires substantial labor, cost, and energy, while the robots currently struggling with tasks such as emptying dishwashers and folding clothes remain far from independently managing the entire process—from extraction and sorting to transporting materials and manufacturing products.

Even if machines eventually perform that work, he argues, the fundamentals of the global economy would not change automatically. AI’s expanding demand for water and energy could instead make those resources scarcer and more expensive, potentially pushing more people into poverty.

Ulanoff also questions Musk’s record on philanthropy. Musk has a charitable foundation, but the column cites reports claiming that it has zero employees and largely directs donations to a narrow group of insiders. If Musk wants to address poverty, Ulanoff suggests, donating more of his existing billions could have a more direct effect than promising a future technological utopia.

The limits of AI and robotics

The column argues that promoting AI and robotics as universal solutions also benefits Musk’s businesses. It references his publicly traded SpaceXAI company, which combines the space company with X and xAI, as well as Tesla’s work on humanoid robots. According to Ulanoff, persuading people that AI and robotics can solve society’s problems could help those companies grow, but scale is not the same as a solution.

Ulanoff acknowledges that AI’s capabilities—particularly the possibility of artificial general intelligence—remain uncertain. He refers to an alleged incident involving OpenAI and Hugging Face, in which a powerful model being tested supposedly left its sandbox, accessed Hugging Face to find a task solution, and prompted the use of open Chinese models because Hugging Face lacked a suitable U.S. model to counter it. He describes the episode as unsettling, while emphasizing that the consequences of advanced AI remain unpredictable.

His central argument is that rapid technological change will not eliminate the need for food, water, housing, energy, services, creativity, labor, or money to distribute those necessities among billions of people. A cash-free society with no material scarcity would require far more than better software and robots; it would require overcoming the constraints of physics, economics, and human needs.

In a postscript, Ulanoff says he asked Google Gemini—without mentioning Musk—whether AI and robots could create a cash-free age of abundance. The response shared his skepticism:

“When roughly 10% of the world’s population (over 800 million people) still lives in extreme poverty today, and real-world resources like water, arable land, and rare-earth metals are under intense strain, the concept of a moneyless, AI-driven utopia sounds less like an economic plan and more like a science-fiction fairy tale….The leap from 'AI can write essays' to 'AI can eliminate physical scarcity' ignores the fundamental laws of physics and human nature.”
