Moonshot AI has introduced Kimi K3, an open-source language model with 2.8 trillion parameters that the Chinese company calls the world’s largest open-source model.
Designed for advanced research tasks, Kimi K3 targets long-horizon coding, knowledge work, and reasoning. It has a 1 million-token context window, built-in visual perception capabilities, and an always-on reasoning setting that Moonshot calls “thinking mode.”
The model contains roughly 75% more parameters than DeepSeek V4 Pro, which has about 1.6 trillion parameters. Moonshot describes Kimi K3 as the first open-source model in the 3-trillion-parameter class.
According to company representatives, benchmark tests put Kimi K3 on par with the most powerful proprietary systems from Anthropic and OpenAI.
Moonshot AI was founded in March 2023 by graduates of Tsinghua University. Despite its relatively short history, the company’s valuation soon reached $3 billion. The Financial Times reported that, alongside the Kimi K3 launch, the startup is preparing to raise new funding that could lift its valuation to about $31.5 billion.
