Rockstar Games has managed to irritate physical-media fans and then give them a sliver of hope. According to a new report from Polish outlet PPE.pl, the first retail version of GTA VI may ship without an actual disc in the box, but a proper disc edition is now said to be planned for later. That means the GTA VI retail release could begin with a download code, with a true physical edition arriving after launch.
The twist matters because Rockstar and Take-Two have already been playing semantic games around the retail release. The boxed version is expected to arrive alongside the digital one, yet early buyers would reportedly get a download code rather than a disc – an approach that feels less like a collector’s item and more like an expensive receipt.
What Rockstar is reportedly planning
Graczdari, an insider previously linked to European physical game sales, now says a full disc release is slated for December, before the usual holiday rush. PPE.pl also says Rockstar support told one customer that current pre-orders cover only digital versions, while a physical copy should be available ”in the coming months”.
That would fit a broader industry habit: keep the launch flexible, then sell the premium box later to collectors who still want a shelf item. Publishers love that trick because it squeezes two audiences – day-one buyers and nostalgia buyers – without needing to explain why a ”physical” game contains no physical game.
GTA VI release date and pricing
- Launch date: 19 November
- Platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X and S
- Language support: official text translation into Russian
- Standard edition price: $80
- Full edition price: $100
- Russia pricing: starting from 9,999 rubles at M.Video
There is also no sign that the new GTA Online will be ready on day one, which will disappoint anyone hoping the multiplayer side arrives in lockstep with the main game. For Rockstar, that is hardly surprising: the company has spent years turning GTA Online into the real money machine, so it can afford to pace the rollout however it likes.
As for retail in Russia, the game is expected to be sold by M.Video at a price above the official one, starting from 9,999 rubles. The bigger question is whether Rockstar really intends to keep a true disc edition for later this year, or whether ”coming months” will quietly turn into a very long wait.
