God of War Laufey still has no official release date, but the silence is starting to look less mysterious. Multiple well-connected sources now point to the first half of 2027 for the God of War Laufey release date, which lines up with Sony’s habit of spacing out its biggest tentpoles instead of rushing them out to fill a calendar slot.
That would make Laufey one of the more predictable PlayStation launches in a while: not this year, not apparently 2028, and probably close enough to feel real. For a series that often lands in spring when Sony wants maximum visibility, the timing also makes strategic sense – especially if Santa Monica Studio is aiming to avoid the crowded holiday crush.
God of War Laufey release window
The latest word from insiders is consistent. Jason Schreier has already said the game is ”definitely” not a 2028 release, while other sources now place the target in the first half of 2027. One of those reports comes from AlexandreNGamR, and another from Nate the Hate, who said the timing was the last thing he heard, though plans can always shift.
If that window holds, Sony gets a marquee title that can anchor a spring lineup without stepping on the publisher’s other heavy hitters. It would also fit a pattern: most major God of War releases, aside from God of War Ragnarok in November, have historically shown up around March or April.
What Santa Monica Studio is building
God of War Laufey is set in Everywhen, the afterlife of the gods, where Faye ends up after death. That puts the story on new ground while keeping it tied tightly to Kratos, Atreus, and the Norse-era mythology that made the modern series such a huge deal in the first place.
The game is being made for PS5 and is said to mix the older and newer combat styles. Add in a talking sword and giant magic for Faye, and Santa Monica Studio looks to be trying to widen the series without abandoning the bruising, up-close fighting that made it famous. Smart move – reinvention is safer when it still feels like God of War.
- Platform: PS5
- Setting: Everywhen, the gods’ afterlife
- Combat: a mix of old and new systems
- Weapons and powers: a talking sword and giant magic
Sony’s spring slot is the one to watch
The real question now is whether Sony sticks to that early-2027 target or quietly slides the game by a few months. Either way, this is looking less like a far-off tease and more like the next big PlayStation release waiting to be dated – preferably before the industry starts pretending summer is a launch strategy.
