Russian model showcases Maëlle cosplay from Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Alice “Mercurygin” Arkhangelskaya teamed up with photographer Victoria “Milligan Photo” Romanova to recreate Maëlle from Clair Obscur: Expedition 33-revealing a character far more complex than her initial appearance suggests.

On the surface, Maëlle is a 16-year-old orphan and adoptive sister to the engineer Gustav. A skilled foil fencer with a sharp tongue, she lost her parents at age three and bounced through numerous foster families-none able to handle her rebellious streak. Unlike typical RPG protagonists who venture out on heroic quests to save their cities, Maëlle’s goal is to escape the city altogether.

Game writer Jennifer Sverdberg-Jen told the Academy of Arts and Sciences that Maëlle is the story’s “hidden main character.” This isn’t mere hype. Gustav leads the first act and dies by its end. Verso takes over the second act, revealing much of the world’s lore. Meanwhile, Maëlle stays in the shadows until the finale, when it’s revealed Maëlle is actually Alicia Descendre-a survivor of a family mansion fire where her brother Verso sacrificed himself to save her.

Arkhangelskaya’s cosplay draws directly from Maëlle’s combat outfit: a sleek black-and-purple tailored jacket with structured epaulettes and gilded Art Deco ornamentation, slim pants with straps, elbow-length gloves, and knee-high lace-up boots. Sandfall Interactive, the game’s developer, built the visual style around France’s Belle Époque-combining the practicality of a fencer with prewar Parisian flair.

Released in 2025, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has already won several gaming awards. Creator Guillaume Brochet conceived the project back in 2019 while at Ubisoft, drawing inspiration from the Final Fantasy series, among other childhood favorites.
