Alexa+ reaches Australia at AU$29.99 for non-Prime users

Amazon is bringing Alexa+ to Australia, giving local users early access to its more conversational voice assistant before it becomes part of the Amazon Prime package. Non-Prime users will pay AU$29.99 per month once the early-access period ends.

The Australian rollout follows Alexa+'s launch in the US in February 2025 and its arrival in the UK in March 2026, according to TechRadar. Amazon says it plans to expand the service to more than 10 additional countries during 2027, although it has not named those markets.

How Alexa+ differs from the old assistant

Alexa+ is built on large language models and is designed to handle conversations rather than isolated commands. Users can change subjects without resetting the context, continue speaking without repeating the wake word, and ask Alexa+ to remember preferences.

The assistant runs across more than Echo speakers and displays. Amazon lists support for Fire TV, mobile apps, and web browsers. TechRadar additionally highlighted tasks such as placing Amazon orders and notifying users about package deliveries captured by a Ring camera.

Amazon says Australian users will receive regional language and service support developed by local engineering and linguistic teams. The adaptation covers Australian speech, slang, cultural references, and local expressions, while integrations include ABC, Sky News, OpenTable, and Tripadvisor.

Access, hardware, and pricing

Australian users with existing Amazon devices can apply for Early Access online. Some newer Echo speakers will receive access automatically as Amazon sends invitations across the country. TechRadar said the list of incompatible devices is relatively short, but it did not identify every compatible or incompatible model; the latest Alexa-enabled hardware is expected to provide the best experience.

For Prime members, Alexa+ will be included after Early Access. TechRadar reported that Australian Prime costs AU$9.99 per month, making membership substantially cheaper than the AU$29.99 monthly Alexa+ subscription for non-members. Early Access itself remains free for Australian users.

The reporting does not establish when Early Access will end or when the standard rollout will begin, and Amazon has not supplied a complete device-compatibility list. That leaves hardware ownership as the main unresolved practical issue: the subscription price is clear, but users with older Echo devices still cannot tell from this announcement whether they will need to upgrade.

The two outlets emphasize different parts of the launch: ITzine focused on Australian localization, services, and the expansion plan, while TechRadar concentrated on device support and Alexa+'s practical home tasks. Taken together, the announcement looks like a meaningful expansion of Alexa’s capabilities rather than a simple regional release—but its value for existing Echo owners depends on compatibility details Amazon has not yet published.
