Samsung’s next Galaxy Watch Ultra looks set for the kind of upgrade the first model should probably have had already: a much brighter display and a far bigger battery. If the latest leak is accurate, the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 could jump to 5,000 nits of peak brightness and stretch battery capacity from 590 mAh to 800 mAh, which is the sort of spec sheet swing that actually changes daily use instead of just polishing the brochure.

That would make the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 a more practical smartwatch for outdoor use than the current model, especially in direct sunlight and on longer trips away from a charger. The new model is also expected to keep the rugged Ultra formula almost untouched on the outside.

Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 brightness could reach 5,000 nits

According to Ice Universe, the standout change is the AMOLED panel. At 5,000 nits, it would become the brightest smartwatch screen on the market, at least on paper. The current Galaxy Watch Ultra tops out at 3,000 nits, while Garmin’s Fenix 8 Pro with a MicroLED panel reaches 4,500 nits.

Samsung is reportedly using a new OCF OLED panel first shown by Samsung Display at MWC 2025. The company said that panel is 20% thinner and more power efficient, drawing the same energy at 5,000 nits as older panels do at 3,000 nits. That’s the kind of upgrade that matters far more than a slight case refresh nobody notices after week one.

Battery capacity rises to 800 mAh

The battery rumor is almost as eye-catching as the display spec. A move from 590 mAh to 800 mAh would mean an increase of about 36%, and paired with a more efficient screen it could push battery life from 60 hours to three or four days. For an outdoor-focused watch, that is the difference between ”nice idea” and ”actually wearable on a trip.”

  • Peak brightness: up to 5,000 nits
  • Battery capacity: 800 mAh
  • Current Galaxy Watch Ultra battery: 590 mAh
  • Expected durability: IP69K and 10 ATM water resistance

Launch timing with Samsung’s foldables

The watch is currently tipped to debut on 22 July alongside Samsung’s new foldables: Galaxy Flip 8, Galaxy Fold 8 and Galaxy Fold8 Ultra. Samsung often uses these summer launches to refresh its premium hardware stack in one shot, which also keeps the company’s ecosystem message nice and tidy for a day or two.

If this leak holds up, the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 will not be a design reinvention. It will be something more useful: a brighter, tougher, longer-lasting version of the same idea. The real question is whether Samsung keeps the price and positioning close to the first model, or uses those headline specs as an excuse to ask for more money.
