Xiaomi’s next compact flagship is shaping up to be a battery-first upgrade. A fresh leak says the Xiaomi 18 engineering prototype is running a 7,200mAh cell, which would give it a modest bump over the Xiaomi 17’s 7,000mAh battery without turning the phone into a brick.

That kind of increase sounds small on paper, but it matters more in a compact phone than it would in a giant slab built to swallow even bigger cells. The real pressure point is that Xiaomi is trying to stay in a size class where rivals often trade battery life for hand comfort, while some larger phones are now pushing 8,000mAh and 10,000mAh packs.

Xiaomi 18 battery and charging details

The Xiaomi 18 battery leak comes from Digital Chat Station, who says the battery figure applies to an engineering prototype. Earlier reports already suggested the Xiaomi 18 would get a bigger battery than its predecessor, and this is the first number attached to that claim.

  • Battery: 7,200mAh
  • Previous model: 7,000mAh
  • Wired charging: 100W
  • Wireless charging: supported

Compact flagship hardware keeps getting denser

The Xiaomi 18 is expected to use a 6.4-inch 2K display with ultra-narrow symmetrical bezels, plus SuperPixel display technology. Xiaomi is clearly trying to keep the phone easy to hold while stuffing in more hardware, which is the kind of engineering trick that usually shows up in premium phones only after the market has already made the compromises obvious.

Under the hood, the phone is rumored to run on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, a 2nm chip that it shares with the Pro model. That would make it one of the few compact flagships pairing a next-generation chip with a dual 200-megapixel camera system, which is a very Xiaomi way to avoid doing anything halfway.

Camera upgrades and the missing back screen

The camera setup is said to include a 200MP rear system with large sensors, and the standard model is also tipped to get a 3X periscope telephoto lens for the first time. That zoom hardware had previously been limited to Pro versions, so if this holds, Xiaomi is spreading premium features more aggressively across the line.

Other expected features include ultrasonic fingerprint recognition and full waterproofing. The one thing that will stay off the standard model is the back screen design seen on the Pro lineup, which keeps the flashier gimmick exactly where Xiaomi seems to think it belongs.

September launch window and the iPhone 18 Pro series

The Xiaomi 18 series is expected to arrive in September, possibly a little earlier than last year, and it will land around the same time as the iPhone 18 Pro series. That matchup will tell the story: Xiaomi is pushing specs hard, while Apple will almost certainly sell refinement, ecosystem, and fewer camera-number fireworks.

More details are likely to surface in the coming weeks. The only open question is whether Xiaomi can keep adding battery, cameras, and top-end silicon without losing the compact feel that is supposed to make the Xiaomi 18 different in the first place.
