Apple is drawing a hard line with watchOS 27: five older Apple Watch models are out, and the reason is the new AI features baked into the update. That means the Series 6, Series 7, Series 8, Apple Watch SE 2, and the first Apple Watch Ultra will be left behind, while newer watches get the full package, including the updated Siri AI and new gesture controls.

According to Apple, watchOS 27 will be supported on Apple Watch Series 9 and later, Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later, plus Apple Watch SE 3. Older models should still receive basic security updates, but the new AI-powered features will be limited to the newer hardware.

The split is a familiar one for Apple, even if it will sting more than usual. The company has built its reputation on long software support, but AI tends to be the excuse that changes the rules: the heavier compute load ends up becoming the new gatekeeper.

Which Apple Watch models get watchOS 27

Apple says the watchOS 27 cutoff starts with Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2, which is also where the S9 chip first appeared. Apple Watch SE 3 is also listed as supported.

  • Supported: Apple Watch Series 9 and later
  • Supported: Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later
  • Supported: Apple Watch SE 3
  • Not supported: Apple Watch Series 6, Series 7, Series 8, Apple Watch SE 2, first Apple Watch Ultra

Apple says performance is the limiter

Apple told TechRadar that it prioritizes power and performance so users get the ”best experience” across its platforms. That tracks with the likely hardware cutoff: the S9 chip, which arrived in Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2, appears to be the line where the newer Siri AI and gesture features become practical.

There is one consolation for owners of older watches. Even if their devices do not get watchOS 27, they should still pair with current iPhones that support Siri AI. So the watch may be aging out of the party, but it is not being locked out of the house.

What Apple’s AI strategy means for Apple Watch support

This is the kind of move that makes Apple look both disciplined and slightly ruthless. Rival wearable makers have been using on-device AI as a selling point too, and the pattern is clear: once the features get smarter, older hardware gets quieter. For buyers, that makes the S9-based models the safe bet if they want the next few years of updates to include more than security patches.

The bigger question is how often Apple will use AI to redraw support lines from here. If watchOS 27 is the first example, expect more older devices to be told, in effect, ”thanks for your service.”
