Avtotor, the Russian automaker in Kaliningrad, has upgraded SWM SUV production to a full-cycle process by adding welding and painting to its local operations. Previously focused on final assembly, the plant now completes major bodywork steps domestically, marking a clear move away from just assembling pre-made modules.

The new welding line supports several SWM models simultaneously: G05Pro, G01F, G01Pro, and G03F. According to Avtotor, this integrated workflow includes body welding, painting, assembly, and geometry inspections. Notably, the plant also provides body galvanization-a critical feature in Russia’s harsh climate where corrosion resistance is essential.

Designed for flexibility, the welding line can quickly adapt to different body styles built on a shared platform. This versatility helps control costs when multiple models are involved and gives Avtotor room to expand or adjust SWM’s lineup in Russia. The first fully produced SUVs from this process are set to hit the market soon.

For Avtotor, this change represents more than a technical upgrade. Since the fallout with brands like BMW, Kia, and Hyundai after 2022, the Kaliningrad facility has been restructuring to attract new partners and gradually reclaim more complex production tasks. Introducing welding instead of just bolt-on assembly signals a push toward deeper domestic manufacturing capabilities rather than simply maintaining the assembly line.

In Russia’s automotive industry, adding welding and paint shop operations is a reliable sign that a brand is committed to serious production. For comparison, Haval’s local factory in Tula has long included these steps, helping the brand cement its position as a segment leader. While SWM’s switch to full-cycle production doesn’t guarantee immediate sales growth, it certainly strengthens its chances of staying relevant-especially amid ruble fluctuations and potential price shifts.
