Hongqi has pulled the wraps off the G919, a large frame-based hybrid SUV that borrows the boxy silhouette and go-anywhere hardware people usually associate with the Mercedes G-Class, then adds some very Chinese flourish of its own. The result is a three-row-sized statement piece with four electric motors, mechanical diff locks, and a claimed 843 hp, which is a lot of drama for a vehicle that also has to work as a plug-in-style hybrid.

The first images and technical details came from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology database, which is often where local brands quietly reveal their next big bet before the marketing department gets the spotlight. At 5,135 mm long, 2,050 mm wide, and 1,950 mm tall, with a 2,900 mm wheelbase, the G919 is not pretending to be compact. It is one of the biggest vehicles in Hongqi’s line-up, and it wears that size the way a heavyweight wears a tailored suit.

Hongqi G919 dimensions and off-road equipment

Hongqi has leaned hard into the off-road look. The G919 gets reinforced bumpers, towing hooks, a roof rack platform, auxiliary lighting, and AT tires, while a lidar unit sits on the roof. That combination suggests the brand wants buyers to see more than just styling theatre; it wants to signal capability, even if the market will still ask the obvious question: does this thing actually leave the pavement, or just look good pretending to?

  • Length: 5,135 mm
  • Width: 2,050 mm
  • Height: 1,950 mm
  • Wheelbase: 2,900 mm

Hongqi G919 hybrid powertrain and 843 hp output

The powertrain is the real headline grabber. Under the hood is a 2.0-litre turbo engine rated at 218 hp, but it does not drive the wheels directly; it acts as a generator for the battery and electric motors. Add the four motors together and Hongqi says the combined output reaches 843 hp and 1,320 Nm, with a 64.1 kWh traction battery and up to 220 km of pure-electric driving.

  • 2.0-litre turbo engine: 218 hp
  • Electric motors: four
  • Combined output: 843 hp
  • Peak torque: 1,320 Nm
  • Battery: 64.1 kWh
  • Electric range: up to 220 km

That setup puts the G919 into the same ”how many systems can we stack into one SUV?” territory that premium Chinese brands have been working for a while, from premium EV rivals to full-size off-road hybrids. The difference here is that Hongqi is packaging the formula in a vehicle that is clearly meant to play in the same visual arena as ultra-recognizable luxury off-roaders, not hide in the background.

Mechanical diff locks and air suspension

There is some serious hardware underneath the styling. Hongqi says the G919 comes with air suspension and mechanical locking differentials at both the front and rear, which is the sort of specification sheet that should make real off-road fans pay attention, at least long enough to wonder about weight, software tuning, and how all that battery hardware changes the party on loose ground.

An official launch is expected soon. If Hongqi prices and positions the G919 aggressively, it could become one of those cars that local buyers either instantly understand or instantly dismiss; there usually is not much middle ground with a 5.1-metre luxury off-roader wearing lidar on its roof.
