Rockstar Games is finally doing what many Grand Theft Auto V owners expected long ago: from 18 June 2026, players on PS4 and Xbox One who bought the digital version will be able to move to the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S editions at no extra cost. The GTA V free upgrade closes a pricing gap that annoyed console players for years, especially after the next-gen version originally arrived as a paid upgrade.

That makes the current console release line up more closely with the PC version, which received its own next-gen-style update for free last spring. It also keeps GTA V in the strange position of being both a decade-old blockbuster and a game still being re-sold, re-cut, and re-labeled for each hardware cycle.

What the GTA V free upgrade includes

The upgraded edition brings sharper graphics, ray tracing, 60 frames per second, 4K resolution, and faster loading times, along with other improvements Rockstar has not itemized here. In practical terms, that is the standard next-gen checklist – but for once, it will not come with a fresh bill attached for existing digital owners on the older consoles.

  • Free upgrade for digital GTA V owners on PS4 and Xbox One
  • Available from 18 June 2026
  • Targets PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S
  • Includes improved graphics, ray tracing, 60 fps, 4K, and faster loading

A belated goodwill move after a paid launch

When the current-gen version went on sale in March 2022, Rockstar charged $10 on PS5 for the first three months before raising it to $40, while the Xbox Series X and S version started at $20 before also settling at $40. That setup drew predictable irritation from players who had already bought GTA V once, or twice, or three times if you count the full history of this monster release.

There is a broader industry pattern here. Publishers are increasingly using free upgrades to soften the transition between console generations, but Rockstar took its time – and then some – before matching the friendlier approach rivals have used for years. The reward is obvious: less resentment, more players on the latest build, and a fresher base for GTA Online activity.

The Kortz Center Heist is next for GTA Online

Rockstar paired the upgrade news with details of the next major GTA Online update, The Kortz Center Heist, which arrives in July and adds the named robbery. More information is expected in the coming weeks, which is Rockstar-speak for ”we are not ready to say more yet.”

GTA V originally launched in September 2013 on PS3 and Xbox 360, then spread across PS4, Xbox One, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X and S. Nearly 13 years later, sales have topped 230 million copies, so even small platform changes still matter – and they still help keep one of gaming’s most persistent cash machines spinning a little longer.
