Apple has paused work on a new AirPods Pro model equipped with built-in cameras, according to insider Kosutami, who shared the update without additional details. The project was one of Apple’s most unconventional headphone experiments, aiming to use cameras not for photography but to enhance AI features and environmental awareness.
This shift contrasts sharply with a Bloomberg report from May, which indicated Apple was nearing completion of these camera-equipped AirPods Pro. At that time, Bloomberg noted that launch timelines might slip if Apple found the AI-powered visual recognition capabilities unsatisfactory. Apple had been developing these visual AI functions under its so-called Visual Intelligence initiative, already integrated into recent iPhones.
Apple’s vision for AirPods Pro with AI-powered cameras
Embedding cameras in earbuds fit Apple’s broader exploration of ”smart” AI that operates without needing a dedicated screen. Bloomberg also reported that Apple is investigating other wearables with cameras, including future Apple Watch models. For AirPods, this vision meant transforming the headphones from simple audio accessories into sophisticated sensors that gather real-world context for AI processing.
Challenges of integrating cameras into true wireless earbuds
However, the idea faced obvious challenges. True wireless earbuds have very limited internal space for sensors, batteries, and processing chips. Plus, the camera’s field of view is far narrower compared to smart glasses. Competitors in the AI wearable space have taken different routes-Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, for instance, combine cameras and voice assistants, offering a more practical platform for visual AI. Industry sources suggest Apple is continuing to develop its own smart glasses as a better fit for these features.
Future of AirPods and Apple’s AI wearable strategy
Even without cameras, AirPods remain a critical business pillar for Apple. Canalys estimates Apple holds roughly a quarter of the global true wireless stereo (TWS) headset market. For years, AirPods have served as a popular gateway into Apple’s ecosystem beyond the iPhone.
If development of camera-equipped AirPods Pro remains on hold, Apple will likely focus future updates on hearing-related features and voice control while shifting visual AI experiments to eyewear or watches. New leaks around Apple’s fall product cycle could shed light on the project’s fate.
