Russian cosplayer caterpillar has perfectly recreated the iconic red-and-black plugsuit of Asuka Langley Soryu from Neon Genesis Evangelion, one of anime’s most recognizable outfits. The fiery red hair, the signature ”02” on the chest, and the confident pose capture Asuka’s spirit without missing a beat.
Who is Asuka Langley Soryu?
Asuka Langley Soryu debuted in the landmark 1995 anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, a creation of director Hideaki Anno with character designs by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. She’s the Second Child pilot of Evangelion Unit-02 and one of the two main female characters alongside Rei Ayanami.

According to the series’ lore, Asuka is of German-Japanese descent, born and raised in Germany, and holds American citizenship. A child prodigy, she earned a university degree by age 14 and speaks fluent Japanese, though kanji remains a challenge. She was recruited into NERV’s German division specifically as Unit-02’s pilot-the most powerful Evangelion when it first appeared in the story.

Beneath Asuka’s aggressive confidence lies a tragic backstory. When she was four, her mother Kyoko participated in a contact experiment with Unit-02 that broke her mind. Kyoko stopped recognizing Asuka, referring to her as ”that girl” and treating a doll as her daughter instead. Shortly after Asuka was chosen as a pilot, she found her mother had taken her own life. What appears as arrogance and self-assurance masks deep emotional scars from a mother who refused to accept her as her child.

The Unit-02 plugsuit and its iconic status
The plugsuit is a skintight suit worn by Evangelion pilots to synchronize with their mechs, designed to boost sync rates by minimizing interference. Beyond its function, it’s one of anime’s most iconic visual symbols.

The Unit-02 plugsuit’s red with black sleeves and orange chest accents mimics the colors of the Evangelion mech itself. Sadamoto’s design imbued red with a dual meaning: passionate intensity and concealed vulnerability. Caterpillar’s latex version faithfully replicates the color scheme, including white gloves, the detailed torso pattern, and the distinctive collar.

Neon Genesis Evangelion cosplay legacy in 2026
Since its 1995 debut, Neon Genesis Evangelion remains one of the most influential anime series ever made. The Rebuild of Evangelion film tetralogy concluded in 2021 with Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, wrapping up the story arc. In 2025, the franchise celebrated its 30th anniversary, with Bandai releasing limited-edition figures, including a commemorative Asuka in her plugsuit. There are no new Evangelion projects underway; director Hideaki Anno has confirmed the saga ended with the Rebuild series.
While Neon Genesis Evangelion’s core story is complete, the characters’ iconic imagery-like Asuka’s plugsuit-continues to inspire cosplay and fan creativity worldwide. As late as 2026, these visuals remain defining symbols of anime’s golden era, with cosplay artists like caterpillar keeping the legacy alive with detailed, passionate tributes.
