Yandex has upgraded its smart camera with a new feature that lets users ask, via voice or chat, what’s happening in the frame. You can now ask the digital assistant Alice if the child is asleep, who’s standing by the door, or whether the gates are open. This interaction works through Yandex ecosystem devices and Alice AI chat.
The key technology behind this is Alice AI VLM, a vision-language model that enables the camera to not just detect motion but identify scene details when prompted. Users can make queries using Yandex Station smart speakers, TV Station, Yandex Drops earbuds, or simply by typing in the Alice AI chat.
However, there are subscription tiers controlling usage limits. Plans labeled ”Extra” and ”Standard” offer unlimited camera queries, while free users get up to 20 requests per month. The feature also extends to searching the camera’s video archive by verbal description, but this is restricted to paid subscriptions as well.
Alongside AI queries, Yandex has added practical, traditional camera controls. You can now preset up to three fixed camera angles and switch between them using voice commands. Recording can also start automatically based on user-defined conditions. This suits typical home monitoring scenarios: one angle faces the entrance, another the yard, and a third the nursery, eliminating the need to manually adjust the camera in an app.
How Yandex smart camera uses AI for interactive home monitoring
This move follows a global trend where AI-enhanced video surveillance is evolving beyond simple motion alerts to interactive querying. Google is rolling out AI event descriptions for Nest cameras, and Amazon is improving video search inside its Ring ecosystem. Yandex is localizing this approach for Russian-speaking smart homes, leveraging its own smart speakers, TVs, and earbuds as interfaces.
Subscription plans for Yandex smart camera AI features
Yandex offers the following subscription tiers for AI camera features:
- Extra: Unlimited camera queries and video archive search
- Standard: Unlimited camera queries
- Free: Up to 20 camera queries per month, no archive search
Practical camera controls for home security
The new preset camera angles and automatic recording triggered by user-defined conditions enhance typical home monitoring setups. This allows easier management of camera views throughout the day without app interaction.
Yandex smart camera’s role in AI video surveillance innovation
For Yandex, integrating AI-based interactive features helps connect its hardware sales with subscription revenue streams, similar to models used by Ring and Nest. The accuracy of Alice AI VLM in understanding camera scenes and user preference for interactive queries will determine the feature’s success.
