Xiaomi has officially stopped software support for several of its devices, including the Xiaomi 12, Xiaomi 12 Pro, and Xiaomi 12S Ultra. These models, along with the Redmi Note 12T Pro, Redmi K60E, Xiaomi Pad 6, and Xiaomi Pad 6 Pro, will no longer receive firmware updates or security patches.
The updated list of discontinued devices appeared in Xiaomi’s Security Center and covers both Chinese and several international versions, such as the POCO X5 5G and POCO X5 Pro 5G. Following Xiaomi’s policies, these phones will not receive any further software or firmware updates, including security fixes, and the company might stop accepting vulnerability reports for them.
Devices affected by Xiaomi’s end of software support
- Xiaomi 12
- Xiaomi 12 Pro
- Xiaomi 12S Ultra
- Redmi Note 12T Pro
- Redmi K60E
- Xiaomi Pad 6 (Chinese version)
- Xiaomi Pad 6 Pro (Chinese version)
- POCO X5 5G
- POCO X5 Pro 5G
The end of support for the Xiaomi 12 series is expected, as these phones launched in late 2021 and featured the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip. The Xiaomi 12S Ultra, released in 2022, was Xiaomi’s flagship model highlighting advanced mobile photography with Leica optics. Although the Xiaomi Pad 6 and Pad 6 Pro are newer, the support cutoff currently affects only their Chinese versions.
Comparison of Xiaomi’s software update lifespan with competitors
Xiaomi’s software update lifespan is noticeably shorter compared to competitors. Google and Samsung promise up to seven years of Android and security patch updates for their flagship devices. Apple typically supports iPhones for five to six years, although without a strict policy per model. Xiaomi’s update duration varies by device and region, making it essential for users to check support timelines-especially when considering discounted POCO phones-before purchasing, since support longevity can outweigh specs like camera or processor.
Impact on the secondary market and security
The end of software support affects the secondary market as well. Smartphones without security patches tend to depreciate faster, and many corporate and banking services block access from devices running unsupported Android versions. With Xiaomi’s phased end of support for 2022 and 2023 devices likely coming next, competition to offer longer software support windows in the Android ecosystem is increasing.
