Russian cosplayer Sasha Holland, known online as Shirogane Sama, has delivered a strikingly bold take on Marin Kitagawa from the anime ”My Dress-Up Darling.” Sporting a burgundy red wig with pigtails, small horns, pointed ears, and a black crop top, her cosplay perfectly channels the character’s rebellious spirit and vibrant style. For Sasha, cosplay isn’t just a hobby – it’s the ultimate expression of love for her favorite anime characters.

Who is Marin Kitagawa?

Marin Kitagawa is a first-year high school student and a confident gyaru – a Japanese fashion subculture known for bold makeup, bleached hair, and extravagant style. More importantly, she’s a passionate otaku whose room overflows with anime posters and merchandise. Marin’s fandom spans from classic magical girl shows to adult visual novels and eroge games, boasting around fifty ”number one favorite characters.”

For Sasha, cosplay transcends casual fandom – she calls it ”the highest form of love for a character.” She even refuses to cosplay someone she cherishes unless she’s confident in delivering an accurate portrayal, not wanting to tarnish their image.

Marin’s connection with Wakana Gojo, her quiet classmate who crafts doll heads with surgical precision, forms the emotional core of the story. Wakana becomes her personal costume maker, and she becomes his first friend in years-giving rise to one of the most warmly received romantic narratives in recent anime.

Manga artist Shinichi Fukuda deliberately avoided typical tropes: Marin isn’t a tsundere or the typical ”perfect waifu.” She’s a real person with a loud personality, strong empathy, and zero shame-at least around people she trusts. Her character sparked what’s been dubbed the ”gyaru revolution” in anime, leading to a surge of similar characters appearing since 2022.

Rizu-Ken costume from My Dress-Up Darling

Rizu-Ken is a fictional in-anime game character Marin wants to cosplay – a demon girl with horns, pointed ears, fangs, and tiny wings. To bring this look to life, Marin turns to Wakana Gojo for his expert sewing skills, needing a costume crafted down to the millimeter. This cosplay was the catalyst for their entire story.

My Dress-Up Darling anime status in 2026

The second season of the anime premiered in summer 2025 to the same enthusiastic reception as the first. The manga concluded in March 2025 after 15 volumes, earning praise for one of the most satisfying endings in contemporary romantic manga. As of April 2026, a third season has not been officially announced, though there is plenty of source material to draw from.

Also in April 2026, the anime made its debut on Netflix, marking its first major streaming launch outside of Crunchyroll on Western platforms. For many international viewers, this marked their first encounter with Marin and Gojo’s story.

Marin’s character redefined anime’s portrayal of gyaru culture, blending it with genuine emotion and vulnerability-a trend other anime creators are now adopting. Given the buzz around potential new seasons and increased global availability, the character and her story are poised to inspire a fresh wave of cosplay and fandom worldwide.
