Matthew Lillard is moving from Marvel territory to James Gunn’s new DC world, with a role in Man of Tomorrow now officially in the bag. DC is keeping the character under wraps for now, which is either a smart mystery or a very convenient way to avoid spoilers before the cameras have even finished warming up.
The timing is amusing: Daredevil: Born Again has just wrapped, where Lillard also appeared, and he is already heading into a very different comic-book corner. Hollywood loves a neat narrative about actors switching sides, even though in practice it usually just means the same performer collecting checks from rival universes.
What Man of Tomorrow is set to cover
The film will center on Brainiac’s invasion, forcing Superman to team up with Lex Luthor to protect Earth. That setup gives Gunn something DC has long liked on paper and often fumbled in practice: a hero story where the villain’s ego is almost as dangerous as the actual alien threat.
Adria Arjona is also reportedly on board. The cast around David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult is starting to look less like a single movie and more like the opening move in a larger DC reset.
Man of Tomorrow release date and returning DC pieces
- Title: Man of Tomorrow, also described as Superman 2
- Director and writer: James Gunn
- Leads: David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult
- Release date in theaters: 9 July 2027
If Gunn is building toward a more interconnected DC slate, this is the kind of casting that helps: familiar faces, a recognizable villain, and a Superman sequel that sounds designed to feel bigger without pretending to be complicated. The real question is whether DC can make this lineup feel like momentum instead of another reset with nicer branding.
