Google has pushed Gemini-powered email summaries in Gmail out to everyone, including free users, with a catch that feels very Google: you can turn them off, but only by switching off a whole bundle of AI features at once. The rollout now covers Android, iOS, and the web, although it is still arriving gradually and does not cover every conversation thread yet.
That means Gmail Gemini summaries are now available worldwide for all users, not just paying subscribers. The feature is still rolling out gradually, and it currently supports only a limited set of languages.
The move marks another step in Google’s push to make Gemini feel less like a standalone chatbot and more like plumbing across Workspace. First came writing help, then summaries in Gmail for paying users, then similar summaries in Google Drive. Now the company is widening the net, even if the experience is uneven at the start.
Which Gmail users get Gemini summaries
Google says the feature is available to all users, but language support is still limited. Right now, the summaries work only for a set of languages that includes English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish.
That broad launch follows a staged expansion. In January 2026, the feature opened to all users in the US; now it is rolling out worldwide. The pattern is familiar: Google tests the feature, widens access, then quietly deals with the rough edges in public.
How Gmail AI tools fit together
The summaries are generated by Gemini after analyzing the contents of individual email threads. Google also offers ”AI inbox” and ”Ask Gemini” features, which let users search for answers without opening messages one by one. For now, those two tools are restricted to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the US, so the free rollout is not quite the all-you-can-eat buffet Google would like it to sound like.
- AI email summaries: rolling out to all users
- Supported platforms: Android, iOS, and web
- Supported languages: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish
- AI inbox and Ask Gemini: Google AI Pro and Ultra, US only
Turning off Gmail AI disables other Workspace features
There is a downside for anyone who prefers a cleaner inbox over a smarter one: the control switch is not surgical. Google’s intelligent features setting disables all related AI functions together, not just Gmail summaries. That means turning it off can also break things such as Google Tasks and remove the ability to set reminders from a Gemini chat.
That trade-off is doing a lot of work here. Google wants the convenience of one AI layer across its apps; users, predictably, would rather not need a master switch for something as basic as email summaries. The company may eventually add finer controls, but for now the message is simple: if you want to silence Gemini in Gmail, you are taking other tools with it.
What happens next for Gmail Gemini summaries
The most likely next step is broader language support and cleaner per-feature controls, because the current setup is too blunt for everyday use. Google has been nudging Gemini deeper into Workspace for months, and this rollout suggests it is betting that convenience will win over annoyance – at least until users start looking for the off switch.
