Epic Games Store has kicked off a weeklong giveaway with two very different freebies: the cult 1995 adventure game ”I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream” and the anime-styled brawler ”River City Girls 2”. One is a grim relic of PC gaming history; the other is a newer co-op beat-’em-up that has already earned a strong Steam reputation. Together, they make for a pretty solid ”add to library” moment, even if neither speaks Russian.

The headline attraction is the Harlan Ellison adaptation, ”I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream”. It sold badly on release, but it picked up cult status over time thanks to its bleak premise and stubborn originality. The setup is wonderfully miserable: a mad supercomputer called A.M. has wiped out humanity except for five people, and then tormented them for the last 109 years. In 2025, the game also picked up support for achievements, controllers, and modern resolutions, which is exactly the sort of late-life polish old PC games usually had to beg for.

What Epic Games Store is giving away

  • ”I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream” – classic point-and-click adventure, first released in 1995
  • ”River City Girls 2” – sequel released in 2022 with six playable characters, improved combat, a larger city, and local plus online co-op
  • Both games can be claimed for free by opening their store pages and clicking ”Get”
  • The promotion runs until 9 July, 18:00 MSK

River City Girls 2 has the stronger modern pull

If ”I Have No Mouth” is the prestige pick, ”River City Girls 2” is the easier sell for most people. It launched in 2022 as a direct sequel to the 2019 original, and Steam users have given it ”very positive” reviews with an 85% rating. That kind of reception matters because beat-’em-ups live or die on feel, and this one clearly landed with players looking for a louder, flashier follow-up.

Epic has been leaning on these timed freebies for years, and the formula is familiar: older cult games to generate nostalgia, newer indie-friendly releases to keep the claim-button traffic humming. The next pair in line is already a change of pace again – factory builder ”Nova Lands” and tattoo shop simulator ”Tattoo Tycoon”.

No Russian language support, no regional lock

There is one practical catch. Neither game includes Russian language support, although the giveaway itself is not region-locked. That means the barrier is comprehension, not access, which is often the trade-off with Epic’s global freebies. For players happy to read in English, it is a decent week to hoard some backlog.
