Model Torie and photographer Milligan have brought to life one of the most beloved companions in recent RPG history – Shadowheart from Baldur’s Gate 3. Cloaked in mystery, the cleric of Shar carries a hidden past, a dagger up her sleeve, and a look that says she’s keeping secrets.
Who is Shadowheart in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Shadowheart is a half-elf cleric devoted to the Domain of Deception, serving Shar – the goddess of darkness and loss. Players first meet her locked inside an illithid pod aboard a nautiloid ship, trapped and unable to escape on her own.
Her real name is Genevieve. Born into a family of Selûne worshippers – Shar’s rival goddess and sister – she was abducted as a child by Shar’s followers. During an initiation ritual in the woods, a group led by Mother Superior Viconia DeVir captured her. Her father tried to rescue her but failed. Shadowheart was raised within Shar’s church, her memories erased, and renamed. Her parents were taken hostage to ensure her loyalty.

Before starting the main quest, Shadowheart underwent a voluntary memory wipe to protect her fellow Shar worshippers. Almost all her past is erased, leaving only a single mission: deliver a mysterious artifact to Baldur’s Gate. This makes her both a reliable and unpredictable ally.
Her personality is closed off, distrustful, and distant. Despite serving a goddess who views cruelty as a tool, Shadowheart rejects wanton violence. This moral tension shapes one of the most complex character arcs in the game.

Why Shadowheart became a cult favorite character
Shadowheart stands out as the only original cleric companion in Baldur’s Gate 3, making her a go-to party member for many players. According to statistics released by Larian Studios, the cleric class is the least popular choice for player-created characters, suggesting many prefer to recruit Shadowheart rather than create their own cleric.
Her story branches dramatically based on player choices. If she kills Nightsong at the end of Act Two and stays loyal to Shar, she transforms into a Dark Justiciar – a powerful but morally conflicted figure. Rejecting Shar and saving Nightsong leads her back to her Selûne roots and reunion with her parents, delivering some of the game’s most emotional moments.

Shadowheart is voiced by Jennifer English, whose performance earned the 2024 BAFTA Award for Best Performer.
Baldur’s Gate 3 update and future outlook
Released in August 2023, Baldur’s Gate 3 is the first game to win Game of the Year at all five major gaming award shows in the same year. It remains a top performer on Steam, boasting a ”Very Positive” rating based on nearly 700,000 reviews.
The latest major update, Patch 8, released in April 2025, added 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, and crossplay between PC and consoles. Since then, Larian Studios has shifted focus from active content development to their new Divinity title and a secretive project codenamed Excalibur. Smaller patches continue regularly – the most recent came in March 2026.
Hasbro, owner of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise, confirmed Baldur’s Gate 4 is in development but without Larian Studios leading the project.
Shadowheart remains one of Baldur’s Gate 3’s most magnetic characters – her complex loyalties and emotional depth continue to engage fans. As the franchise evolves and a new developer takes over for the next chapter, their handling of such iconic characters will be a defining challenge.
