BYD will launch the Song Ultra DM-i in China on 28 May, bringing a hybrid version of the Song Ultra family with two battery options, up to 310 km of electric-only range, and a new rear-wheel-drive platform. It is the sort of spec sheet Chinese automakers love to use as a flex: long EV range, lots of gadgets, and just enough overlap with the fully electric model to keep the family resemblance obvious.

The new crossover uses BYD’s fifth-generation DM hybrid system and will be offered with 26.6 kWh and 38 kWh traction batteries. Those packs are said to deliver 205 km and 310 km of zero-emission driving, respectively, which is a lot for a plug-in hybrid and part of the reason BYD keeps pressing this technology so hard while rivals are still trying to balance price, battery size, and real-world efficiency.

Song Ultra DM-i dimensions and cabin layout

The Song Ultra DM-i measures 4850 x 1910 x 1670 mm, with a 2840 mm wheelbase. BYD says the boot holds 730 liters, and the front seats can fold flat to create a 1.8-meter sleeping area. That is very Chinese-market crossover logic: make the car family-friendly, road-trip friendly, and mildly hotel-like if necessary.

The standard kit includes a 15.6-inch infotainment screen. Higher trims add a ”royal” passenger seat with ventilation, heating, massage, and a leg rest, plus a built-in refrigerator, a 16-speaker audio system, two wireless phone chargers, and cup holders on the center armrest. In other words, BYD is leaning hard into the rolling-lounge formula that has helped domestic brands pressure more expensive foreign SUVs.

Song Ultra DM-i driver assistance and platform

The crossover will also get BYD’s ”God’s Eye” B driver-assistance system with lidar and 27 sensors. Under the skin, it sits on a new rear-wheel-drive platform, which is the bigger technical tell here: BYD is not just stacking batteries and screens, it is pushing a cleaner architecture for the next wave of hybrid SUVs.

That matters because the fully electric Song Ultra EV is already on sale in China, priced from 151,900 to 179,900 yuan. The DM-i version is clearly aimed at buyers who like the EV look and much of the EV experience, but still want the security of a hybrid drivetrain for longer trips. Expect plenty of attention on how far the quoted electric range translates once real roads, weather, and right feet get involved.
