Adata has turned the portable SSD Urban Tapsafe into something closer to a guarded accessory. The new Adata Urban Tapsafe pairs 1900MB/s transfer speeds with NFC-based unlocking, a clip-on mount for creator rigs, and a minimalist look that kicks off the company’s new Urban Series.
Adata Urban Tapsafe specs and storage options
The drive uses a USB 3.2 Gen 2 x2 interface and comes in 1TB and 2TB versions. Adata is pitching it for 4K video editing, large development projects, and extra console storage, which is a pretty standard playbook for fast external SSDs – except this one is also trying to look like it belongs in a camera bag rather than a desk drawer.

NFC locking and shared access
Security is the gimmick that is actually useful. Users can unlock the SSD by tapping a smartphone through Adata’s mobile app, and the same app can manage access for up to nine users with read-only or writable permissions. The drive also locks itself automatically when disconnected, which is the sort of feature people only appreciate after leaving something important plugged in at the wrong time.
The Urban Tapsafe also ships with swappable magnetic covers, so owners can change the look or sort drives by project. That is a small touch, but it fits a market where portable storage is increasingly being sold less as a beige utility box and more as part of a creator workflow.
Clip-on mounting and broad device support
For creators, the more interesting bit is the clip-on mounting system. It attaches directly to camera rigs or smartphone cages without extra adapters, which should make it easier to keep the drive close to the action instead of dangling from a cable like an afterthought.

Compatibility is broad: Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and Linux are all supported, and the drive also works with modern gaming consoles. The black SSD measures 68.68 x 36.18 x 19.18 mm, weighs 72.61g, and comes with a five-year limited warranty.

Adata is entering a crowded portable-SSD field where speed alone is no longer enough. Samsung has been pushing larger-capacity drives, while SanDisk has recently shown off new portable models with even faster peak speeds and up to 4TB of storage, so Urban Tapsafe’s pitch is clear: convenience, security, and creator-friendly hardware have to do some of the heavy lifting.
The real question is whether NFC unlocking and mounting hardware will be enough to make buyers choose it over more ordinary fast SSDs. If Adata can keep the pricing sensible, this could be one of the more practical takes on ”stylish storage” we have seen in a while.
