Changan’s Uni-S crossover is set to roll off the assembly line at Avtotor’s Kaliningrad plant after receiving its local certification (ОТТС). According to industry source Chinese Cars, the certification covers both front-wheel and all-wheel drive versions. Currently, only the all-wheel drive Uni-S is sold in Russia, so the launch of local production could expand the lineup.

Measuring 4550 × 1868 × 1680 mm, the Russian-spec Uni-S comes powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine producing 181 horsepower, paired with a 7-speed automated manual transmission-there’s no traditional automatic option. This drivetrain setup has become common among Chinese crossovers, with brands like Geely, Omoda, and Haval using similar configurations.

At present, the Changan Uni-S is priced from 3.06 million rubles (around $41,000), before any discounts. It’s still unclear whether local assembly in Kaliningrad will lower prices. However, domestic production usually helps stabilize supply, expand trim options, and reduce exposure to fluctuating logistics costs and exchange rates-although immediate price cuts aren’t guaranteed.

For Avtotor, this move further broadens its portfolio of Chinese automakers assembled at its Kaliningrad facility, which already partners with several Chinese brands. For Changan, the Uni-S is particularly strategic. According to Chinese Cars, it’s currently the brand’s best-selling model in Russia. In 2025, Changan ranked among the leading Chinese brands in the Russian market, where SUVs continue to drive the bulk of new car sales. Local assembly of the Uni-S appears to be a long-term bet on growing demand rather than a one-off experiment.

The key question now is when production will start and what specifications the Russian versions will offer. The potential introduction of a front-wheel drive model is especially significant, as such versions typically help cut the entry price below 3 million rubles, targeting a wider slice of Russia’s highly competitive compact SUV segment.
