Epic Games Store has kicked off a week-long giveaway of two very different indie games: the cult point-and-click adventure I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream, and the anime-style brawler River City Girls 2. The first is a grim slice of interactive fiction from 1995; the second is a loud, modern co-op beat-’em-up with a much friendlier attitude toward fists than existential despair.
The pairing is classic Epic strategy: one title with nostalgia and literary pedigree, one with broader action appeal. It keeps the storefront’s weekly freebies in the conversation and gives players two easy downloads instead of one, which is handy when a giveaway needs to feel generous without costing the platform much more than marketing oxygen.
I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream returns to attention
I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream was built from Harlan Ellison’s short story and later became a cult favorite despite poor sales. Its setting is still as bleak as the title suggests: a post-apocalyptic world where the rogue supercomputer A.M. has wiped out humanity apart from five people and spent the last 109 years tormenting them.
The game has also received a small modern-life upgrade in 2025, with support for achievements, controllers, and current resolutions. That kind of patching rarely turns an old adventure into a bestseller, but it does make a free giveaway a lot more appealing to anyone who bounced off the original rough edges.
River City Girls 2 brings the counterweight
River City Girls 2 is the obvious palate cleanser. It launched in 2022 as a direct follow-up to River City Girls from 2019, and it brings six playable characters, a more developed combat system, a larger city, and both local and online co-op.
Steam users have been kinder to it than 1990s buyers were to Ellison’s adaptation: the game holds ”very positive” reviews with an 85% rating. In other words, Epic is giving away one piece of cult history and one much newer crowd-pleaser, which is a neat way to serve both preservation nerds and button-mashers.
How to claim the free games
Getting the games is simple: open each store page and click ”Get.” Epic says the promotion is not limited by region, and neither title includes Russian language support. The giveaway runs until 9 July at 18:00 MSK, after which Epic will rotate in Nova Lands and Tattoo Tycoon.
- Free now: I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream
- Free now: River City Girls 2
- Ends: 9 July, 18:00 MSK
- Next up: Nova Lands and Tattoo Tycoon
Epic’s weekly freebies have become one of the store’s most reliable traffic hooks, and this one works because the games are so different. The only real question is whether more people will show up for the famous title, the better-reviewed sequel, or simply because free is still the most persuasive price tag on PC.
