Samsung may finally be giving the Galaxy Z Fold line the camera attention it has been missing. A new report says the Galaxy Z Fold 8 could jump from a 12MP ultrawide to a 50MP sensor, while keeping the rest of the rear setup largely familiar: a 200MP main camera and a telephoto lens that may be either 10MP or 12MP.

That would be a bigger deal than it sounds. Foldables have long lived in the shadow of Samsung’s Galaxy S phones, which usually get the best imaging hardware first. If this Galaxy Z Fold 8 camera upgrade lands, the Fold 8 would move closer to the company’s flagship slab phones instead of waiting for hand-me-downs.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 camera upgrade could narrow the gap

The reported 50MP ultrawide matches what Samsung already puts in the Galaxy S25 Ultra, and that matters more than a spec-sheet flex. Foldables have typically been one or two steps behind the S series on secondary cameras, so this would be a rare case of the book-style device catching up instead of settling for leftovers.

There’s also a practical upside. Higher-resolution ultrawides can improve macro shots and make 8K video from that lens less of a novelty. For a device that doubles as a productivity machine and a giant camera phone, that’s the sort of upgrade users will actually notice.

  • Reported ultrawide: 50MP
  • Main camera: 200MP
  • Telephoto: 10MP or 12MP
  • Front cameras: 10MP on both cover and inner displays

The rest of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 camera array looks familiar

The catch is that Samsung may be stopping at the ultrawide. The main 200MP sensor is said to carry over from the Z Fold 7, and both selfie cameras are expected to stay at 10MP. That makes the Fold 8 sound less like a full overhaul and more like a targeted fix where Samsung was most obviously behind.

That’s not a bad strategy. Samsung already proved with the Fold 7 that a big main-sensor jump can define a generation; now it may be trying to clean up the weakest part of the package without inflating the whole bill of materials.

Galaxy Unpacked could set the date

Samsung is expected to unveil the phone at Galaxy Unpacked, with rumors pointing to a July 22 event in London. None of that is official, and camera leaks have a habit of wobbling right up to launch day. But if the 50MP ultrawide survives until then, the Fold 8 should be one of the more meaningful imaging updates the series has seen in years.

The bigger question is whether Samsung stops there or uses the Fold 8 to push more than just the ultrawide. If foldables are finally getting the company’s serious camera hardware, the next obvious fight is between incremental polish and a full flagship-level rewrite.
