Honda is using a U.S. battery plant to supply AI data center batteries after its original electric vehicle plan ran into a wall. The move buys the company time, keeps the factory busy, and says a lot about how quickly automakers are reworking their electrification bets when EV demand cools and competition gets uglier.
The plant was built with LG Energy Solution in Ohio for EV batteries, but Honda now wants it to help support data centers while it waits for the market to recover. That is a tidy pivot on paper. In practice, it is also a reminder that factories do not like sitting idle, and corporate strategy gets very flexible when expensive equipment starts collecting dust.
Why Honda is changing course
Honda had already begun dialing back its EV ambitions. It canceled three electric models, including the Acura RSX, and said its earlier promise to sell only EVs and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles by 2040 was no longer realistic. The company points to tariffs and stronger Chinese competition, which is a polite way of saying the old roadmap no longer looks profitable enough to defend.
That fits a broader pattern across the industry: automakers are still talking up electrification, but many are also hedging with hybrids, delayed launches, and lower-risk production plans. Honda is not alone in that retreat, though its case is unusually visible because the battery plant was finished before the EV boom lost steam.
Honda and QuantumScape solid-state battery research
At the same time, Honda has also signed a multi-year research partnership with QuantumScape to work on solid-state batteries. That gives the company a foot in the future while it patches over the present, which is exactly the sort of split personality big manufacturers tend to develop when their first plan stops cooperating.
For now, the data center battery line is the practical answer. The bigger question is whether Honda treats this as a temporary detour or the start of a more permanent reset, because the next battery decision will say more about its EV strategy than any speech about long-term ambition.
