Shift Up unveiled Stellar Blade: Blood Rain, the long-awaited sequel to its acclaimed action game, during the Summer Games Fest 2026 presentation. The new installment continues the story within the same universe but promises a ”bold new direction.”
The sequel centers on a new protagonist named Evie, who appears to be a thematic nod to Eve, the original game’s lead character. While the first Stellar Blade was praised for its flashy visuals and fast-paced combat, scoring an 81 on Metacritic, Blood Rain aims to amplify these strengths with even more cinematic action and intense battles.

The reveal trailer, packed with cinematic sequences and high-octane combat, showcases large-scale landings and acrobatic attacks that elevate the gameplay spectacle. The biggest visual shift is in the enemy design. Whereas the first game’s foes resembled Souls-like creatures, Blood Rain introduces grotesque body horror-style enemies, complete with disturbing transformations from humans into monsters.
Another notable change is the release strategy. Unlike the original Stellar Blade, which was published with Sony Interactive Entertainment’s backing and initially a timed PlayStation exclusive, Blood Rain will be self-published by Shift Up. This move likely responds to fans’ frustrations over the first game’s exclusivity and Sony’s shifting focus on holding titles longer within its own ecosystem.
Shift Up’s decision to go independent could signal a change in their approach to global distribution, perhaps aiming for a broader platform reach from launch. This is particularly relevant as the action RPG genre grows increasingly competitive with major releases from giants like FromSoftware and PlatinumGames. Blood Rain’s emphasis on distinctive art direction and visceral combat may carve out a unique space, especially if it expands beyond console boundaries.
Keep an eye on future updates about Blood Rain’s platforms, release dates, and whether it will introduce online features or new gameplay mechanics that push Shift Up’s signature style further. This sequel has the potential to both deepen the Stellar Blade story and challenge expectations for narrative and design in the action genre.
