Xiaomi and Vivo are turning old phone battery swaps into something more interesting than routine maintenance: a capacity upgrade. Instead of simply replacing worn cells, both brands are offering newer battery tech that can add a meaningful chunk of runtime to older devices, which is exactly the kind of after-sales move that keeps owners from jumping ship.

Xiaomi has already rolled out a battery modernization service for older models in the Xiaomi 13 family, and the numbers are hard to ignore. The company is swapping in silicon-based batteries that raise capacity by 300 to 540 mAh, pushing the lineup from 4500, 4820, and 5000 mAh to 4850, 5361, and 5500 mAh respectively. That is not a cosmetic tweak; it is the sort of upgrade that makes a two-year-old phone feel less tired.

Vivo is taking a similar route, according to Digital Chat Station, by offering high-density Blue Ocean batteries for older devices. The reported gain ranges from 500 to 1500 mAh, which is big enough to matter in daily use and also tells you where the fight is headed: not just faster chips and brighter screens, but better support for phones people already own.

Xiaomi 13 battery upgrades

  • Xiaomi 13: from 4500 mAh to 4850 mAh
  • Xiaomi 13 Pro: from 4820 mAh to 5361 mAh
  • Xiaomi 13 Ultra: from 5000 mAh to 5500 mAh

There is also a clear business angle here. With memory prices climbing and people replacing phones more often, manufacturers have more incentive to squeeze value out of existing customers instead of waiting for the next upgrade cycle. Battery service is the rare repair that can look like a feature launch, and Xiaomi is smart to frame it that way.

Vivo Blue Ocean batteries for older phones

For Vivo owners, the appeal is similar. A serviced phone with a fresher, denser battery can feel closer to a mild upgrade than a repair, especially if the replacement adds several hundred mAh. If the reported range holds, the gain could be enough to give older models a noticeably longer day away from the charger.

The obvious question is which manufacturer follows next. Once one major brand turns battery replacement into a headline feature, the rest usually stop calling it niche very quickly.
