The OnePlus 16 is starting to sound less like a modest refresh and more like a spec-sheet sledgehammer. A fresh leak points to a 6.78-inch BOE LTPO flat display with 1.5K resolution, a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro chip, and a battery that could push close to 9,000mAh.
The report comes from Digital Chat Station, a tipster with a habit of making phone launches awkward for PR teams. If the details hold up, the OnePlus 16 is clearly chasing the same premium-performance crowd that has been flirting with gaming phones and ultra-fast flagships, while trying not to lose its usual clean-software appeal.
OnePlus 16 display could climb to 240Hz
According to the leak, the panel will use LIPO packaging technology, which should help OnePlus squeeze the bezels down to about 1mm on all four sides. The more eye-catching number, though, is refresh rate: 185Hz is said to be the minimum target, while 240Hz is being evaluated. That would put the phone well beyond the 165Hz panel on the OnePlus 15 and into territory that sounds delicious on paper even if most people will never notice the difference outside a spec chart.
The display is also said to support a custom touch control IC and the BT.2020 color gamut. In other words, OnePlus appears to be aiming for the kind of panel that can impress both benchmark watchers and anyone who still cares about actual image quality. That combination is becoming a bigger talking point in flagship phones, especially as rivals keep packing in faster screens and brighter OLEDs.
Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro and LPDDR6 RAM
Under the hood, the OnePlus 16 is tipped to use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro, model SM8975, which would also make LPDDR6 RAM a likely companion. If that sounds familiar, it should: the rumored iQOO 16 is also expected to run the same chip, so OnePlus may have competition before the phone is even official. Qualcomm’s next top-end silicon has become the battleground, and phone makers are once again trying to turn a shared chipset into a unique selling point.
- Display: 6.78-inch custom BOE LTPO flat panel
- Resolution: 1.5K
- Refresh rate: 185Hz minimum, up to 240Hz under evaluation
- Chipset: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro (SM8975)
- RAM: likely LPDDR6
Camera, battery and software details
The leak also sketches out a fairly aggressive camera stack: a 50-megapixel main camera, a 50-megapixel ultra-wide lens, and a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto camera. Add in a battery said to be around the 9,000mAh mark, and this starts looking like OnePlus wants to answer the usual flagship complaints before they are even made.
- Rear cameras: 50MP main, 50MP ultra-wide, 200MP periscope telephoto
- Battery: around 9,000mAh
- Software: OxygenOS 17 based on Android 17
- Base configuration: 12GB RAM and 256GB storage
- Price: around 5,000 yuan, or about $730
OnePlus is expected to debut the phone in China in October. If these leaks are close to reality, the company is leaning hard into the formula that wins attention now: a flashy display, top-tier silicon, and a battery size that makes rival flagships look a little timid. The bigger question is whether it will all arrive together, or whether the final launch trims the headline-grabbing numbers back to something more believable.
